Grand Knight's Message
by SK Paul D. McFarlane, Grand Knight
Good Brothers and Gentle Ladies: We were lucky to get permission to continue our 2009 Tootsie Roll Program for another weekend this month. Thanks to all you Goodwill Ambassadors who stood a post and collected funds to benefit people with intellectual disabilities!
Did you feel the love from the Inwood House residents who attended our 10th Annual Halloween Festival on Saturday, October 24th? The decorations, prizes, snacks, goodies, etc. were gobbled up with waves of thanks! I send those thanks your way for all you did to make this event a rousing success!
Look closely at the various upcoming tours, which the Maryland State Council is sponsoring to benefit the State Scholarship Program. C’mon, wouldn’t you love to be basking in the sun aboard a Caribbean Cruise ship in January 2010 while your neighbors are searching for their snow shovels?
District Deputy Report
by John L. Durbin
Ready or not! November is here already! October was full of many fun activities including the Columbus Day Ball, followed the next day by the celebration at Union Station in Washington, D.C. where the statue of Christopher Columbus stands. The State Fall Meeting in Hagerstown will be held October 23rd, 24th & 25th and there will be plenty of information coming forth as a result of this very important training for District Deputies. I will report on this meeting in a later article. Membership and Retention will certainly be the main focus. The councils in District #30 are all active in their recruiting efforts. Do not let up and,” Do not get discouraged.” We lead by example, so wear your name badges to mass and other parish functions so people will know that you are Knights of Columbus and want to join with us in the good works that are accomplished routinely by our membership. Be active in the life of your parishes and assist your pastors in every way you can. Remember to carry a “Form 100” at all times.
November begins with “All Saints Day” followed by “All Souls.” It is a time to pray for those that have gone before us and to ask for help from the saints as we do our very best to serve God and our neighbor so that we may attain our reward. Montgomery Council will host a memorial mass on November 17th where all deceased members of our District and the Sullivan Brothers Assembly will be remembered particularly those that passed during the period October 31, 2007 thru October 31, 2008. Thanksgiving is on Thursday November 27th. When our families join together for our Thanksgiving celebrations remember to include the Holy Family. Happy Thanksgiving from your District Warden, Jack Giacalone and Phyllis and from John, Nancy and Jill! God bless us and our families.

The Lighter Side
by Paul D. McFarlane
There was a Scottish painter named Smokey Macgregor who was keenly interested in making a penny where he could, so he often thinned down his paint to make it go a wee bit further. As it happened, his pastor decided to do a big restoration job on the exterior of the aging church and Smokey put in a painting bid. Well, as Smokey’s price was the lowest, he got the job. So he set about erecting the scaffolding and setting up the planks, and buying the paint and, yes, I am sorry to say, thinning it down with turpentine.
Well, Smokey was up on the scaffolding, painting away, the job nearly completed, when suddenly there was a horrendous clap of thunder, the sky opened, and rain poured down washing the thinned paint from all over the church and knocking Smokey clear off the scaffold to land on the lawn among the gravestones, surrounded by telltale puddles of the thinned and useless paint.
Now, Smokey was no fool. He knew this was a judgment from the Almighty, so he got on his knees and cried, "Oh, God, Oh God, forgive me; what should I do?" And from the thunder, a mighty voice spoke, “Repaint, Repaint, and Thin No More!"
Council’s 4th Annual Golf Outing to Support Seminarians is postponed until Spring 2010!
Stay tuned…
