Grand Knight's Message
by John C. Moore, Grand Knight
Thank you for your confidence in me to allow me to be your Grand Knight for the coming fraternal year, 2008-2009. It has been my pleasure to serve you over the past several years in the various positions I have had. As you can surmise from the motto I have chosen, "service" will be my mantra. Service is the name of the game for the Knights of Columbus. If the motto wouldn’t have been too long, I would have included "if today you hear His voice, harden not your heart." As Knights we are called to serve our Church, our Community, our Council, our Family, and our Youth.
I pray in the coming fraternal year we are able to hear the call, and can find in our hearts the time and energy to work diligently, tirelessly, and selflessly in order to complete our Council’s good works. I am proud to have worked with many of you in the past and look forward to seeing not only the old faces, but to those we haven’t seen for awhile to help us successfully carry out the Council’s activities.
District Deputy Message
by John Durbin
I wish to offer my most sincere congratulations to the incoming Grand Knights of our new district, District #30. Nancy and I are looking forward to serving the Councils in every way we can. It is an honor to be selected by our State Deputy to act as advisor and guide during the coming year. We need to work together to make our District a close knit group that serves the needs of all concerned. There will be some give and take on the part of everyone to get our First and Second degrees scheduled for the coming year and to set up the installation of officers for the various councils. Working together, we will get it done.
The State Deputy’s theme for this administration is “WE ARE CALLED TO SERVE” Jesus I Trust In You! We as Knights of Columbus are called without thinking about it. Our Service Programs provide the opportunity to accomplish this task. Become active in Church, Community, Council, Youth and Family activities and we cannot help but SERVE.
It is my pleasure to introduce the new Grand Knights and their wives of our new District:
| Council 2323 | Randy Drago and Amanda | (Montgomery) |
| Council 6793 | John Moore and Pat | (Fr Peter Paul Maher) |
| Council 12127 | Jim Barr and Cindy | (Our Lady of Guadalupe) |
| Council 13463 | Ricardo Gomez and Elida | (San Juan Diego) |
| The District Officers are: | DISTRICT DEPUTY John Durbin and Nancy (2323) |
| DISTRICT WARDEN Jack Giacalone and Phyllis (6793) |
Please invite all fellow Grand Knights and wives to your installations and all social functions throughout the coming year. We are family and let’s have fun as a family and enjoy the coming year. Jack, Phyllis, Nancy and I look forward to our first term together assisting our councils in any way we can.
God Bless all of you and your families and God Bless AMERICA! VIVAT JESUS, John Durbin, DD#30
Chaplain’s Message
by Former Chaplain Fr. David Wathen
His Word Shall Not Return to Him Empty
In our Gospel reading for the fifteenth Sunday in ordinary time we hear the parable of the sower. In this story we learn that the seed which is sown by the gardener falls on a variety of different soils with mixed results. Some of the seeds do well and some do not. Some of the seeds will produce an abundant harvest while some will produce nothing.
Jesus teaches us a very simple and yet profound truth about the seed of faith planted within each one of us. His word goes out to the entire world and happily has reached our ears. What happens next is up to us. Our heart and soul is the soil into which His word has been planted.
How have we prepared that soil? Is our heart open to His message even if it means that we will have to make some difficult changes? Will we be receptive to His word when it means taking up our own personal crosses and to continue following Him in spite of our reluctance to do so?
When we prepare a rich soil for His Word then we have His word that we will produce a rich harvest, even if it may not always be obvious to us. Jesus is the gardener and He will do wonderful things in our lives … if we but let Him.
Odds And Ends
Note: The dates for the Council Installation and the Council Picnic have changed. They are July 20th and July 27th respectively. (See details in this Newsletter)
Health for K of C Membership Longevity
by Bill Gulban
Controlling Hypertension Is Crucial for Heart Patients. A healthy diet and regular exercise will help reduce blood pressure and lower your risk of stroke and future cardiac events. The relationship between hypertension and other conditions known as “cardiovascular comorbidities”( CVC’s)—conditions that affect the heart and/or blood vessels, such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke, chronic kidney disease, peripheral arterial disease, and diabetes—is raising red flags in the medical community. According to a study in December 2007, nearly 755 of 1,671 study participants with one or more CVC’s also had hypertension, and less than half achieved their blood pressure goals. If you have hypertension and a cardiac condition, it’s imperative that you take action to reduce your blood pressure.
Modifiable risk factors for hypertension to aggressively manage can be changed—some risk factors such as genetic makeup are not modifiable. Lifestyle is very important. Eat a healthy diet, exercise on a regular basis, don’t smoke, lower your sodium intake, and lose weight if you’re overweight are things you can do before you start swallowing pills. Follow the dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet formulated to help lower blood pressure. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, limit animal proteins and dairy products, use fats, oils, and sugars sparingly. Keep your salt intake to less than 2 grams or less than one teaspoon per day. Prepackaged, process, frozen, and canned foods are often high in sodium, as are many fast foods. Your exercise program should include 30 minutes of physical activity five days per week. Walking is an excellent form of exercise to achieve your exercise goals.
Target numbers for blood pressure goal for high-risk populations, such as those with diabetes or chronic kidney disease, is 130/80 mmHg or lower. Target number for the general population is below 140/90. While both numbers matter, systolic blood pressure—the first of the two numbers—is where efforts most need to be focused because research has shown that health risks are higher with elevated systolic pressure and the target is generally more difficult to achieve.

WHY BUY LIFE INSURANCE?
Why should you buy life insurance anyway?
Because:
…if your wife does become a widow, funds are created automatically…immediately…and at the least possible cost.
…only life insurance will provide a steady income…a guaranteed amount month after month.
…with a check coming in monthly, she can budget accordingly.
…life insurance gives her a precious freedom of choice:
Life insurance is nothing less than an expression of your respect, your concern and your love of your wife and your family. Just ask any widow…
